For much of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress forged from the past of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a moment that may just hold the secret to his downfall once and for all.

The Discovery in the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the world known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.

Similar to other plot points of the final season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their parallel research. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is understood of his research, the container most likely held some of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
