Sonic Racing Throws Shots at Mario Kart World in Recent Marketing Campaign
We're in 2025, and the advertising strategy for Sega's CrossWorlds Racer aim to recall the classic Sega vs. Nintendo battle. A new commercial for the blue speedster's kart racer seemingly displays pixelated video of Nintendo's open-world racer, leveraging it to suggest that Nintendo's offering underuses its free-roaming structure.
Questioning the Rival Title
"Everyone's familiar with that kart racing game, it's great, we don't need to feature it," the promo begins. "But what if you could race aggressively and play on another level?" The clip then continues to showcase several of Sonic Racing's standout features, like extensive vehicle customization and cross-platform multiplayer.
"Alternatively, perhaps you want to roam freely on the expansive world?" the narrator poses, filled with skepticism.
Previous Events of Rivalry
Although this isn't the opening salvo that the creators behind the Sonic racing game have targeted the competing series, it is undoubtedly the bluntest they have spoken regarding the head-to-head battle. The promo also recreates a throwback promo for the 16-bit system that informed viewers about the hardware's "high-speed" capabilities. Back then, Sega highlighted its hardware advantage by depicting a race car tearing around a course. In the final moments, it contrasted the Super Nintendo to an aging Winnebago that had Super Mario Kart displayed on a old TV strapped to the end of the RV using a cord.
