Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials expressed anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a contentious video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, shared on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in defense or defense roles.
"As we did, you all took an vow to defend and defend this constitution," the officials declared in the brief video. "At present, the risks to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are explicit, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to follow orders that contravene the law or our constitution."
The Former President's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a heated reply from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he declared: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a joint statement denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous national pride and excellence. We clearly censure Donald Trump's offensive and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged digital publications and recant his aggressive rhetoric before he leads to violence," the statement added.
Representatives' Firm Reaction
The representatives who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We serve as former service members and security experts who love this nation and took an oath to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No warning, coercion, or incitement will stop us from that sacred responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the constitution and obligation to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "Every American must unite and condemn the president's requests for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, all representatives, the entire nation â regardless of party â should condemn this immediately and without qualification."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "It is very risky, you have prominent officials of the government telling troops to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the offense of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and establish all that."
Administration Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the official said. "You have active officials of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a video message to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to disobey the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The sanctity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can result in people getting killed, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are basically supporting."
