Chicago's MLB Team Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Deal.

In a notable move for their retooling roster, the American League club have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Incentives

The contract includes a $1 million signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside annual pay of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the final year.

Notably, Murakami's compensation may grow based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for earning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing fourth through 10th.
  • An identical bonus for winning the top rookie honor.

The agreement also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his permission and grants him a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Team Legacy

As part of the signing, Chicago owes a compensation payment of roughly $6.58 million to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a additional payment of any triggered salary escalators.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese-born to represent the South Siders, joining reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 soon, joins a emerging group of offensive players in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His most recent NPB campaign was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an side strain. Despite fanning 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 homers, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Initially playing mostly at first base, he has since transitioned to third base.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that brought home Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind one-run win. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he blasted a game-tying home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's subsequent championship win.

The power hitter is slated to be officially presented at a introductory event on Monday.
