The incident happened on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
The committee indicated that one possible explanation points to the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.
Location of the Blast
Personnel have been dispatched to the scene, which is said to be in a southerly district of the city.
Media coverage indicate the explosion occurred in a vehicle lot near a residential building.
Series of Incidents
Since the start of the extensive conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been targeted within Moscow.
This new event comes after other serious incidents, for instance:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a Ukrainian source previously connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are never officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.
The war has increasingly seen covert operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains underway.
